IT for beginners
Who is this course for?
This free, ten hour course is suitable for people with very basic knowledge of ICT/digital skills who want to develop their IT and digital skills.
This course is designed to give you more practice in IT Skills/Digital Skills, once you have mastered the first steps and are comfortable with the keyboard and the mouse. Alternatively, you may wish to use your own tablet initially or throughout – the course can be adapted for tablets or mobile devices.
You will cover the following topics over ten weeks for one hour per session:
• Using the computer and/or tablet and internet safely
• Using computer, keyboard & mouse and/ or tablet
• Accessing and using Email
• Word Processing
• Searching and exploring the Internet
• Accessing and using Public Services online
• Retrieving Information – Text and Images
• Transactions online
During the course you will watch demonstrations and carry out a range of practical exercises and activity to increase your experience and understanding.
Support and feedback
To find out how you are getting on, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan and have one-to-one discussions with your tutor with written feedback.
Additional costs and requirements
There are no entry requirements but it will help if you have had some experience of using a computer/tablet – you are welcome to bring your own tablet/mobile but laptops/PC’s will be provided
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
No, although your tutor may recommend things to try at home if you wish.
About the tutor
I have been teaching with Learn Devon (formerly Adult & Community Learning) for 18 years, most of my teaching has involved Information & Communications Technology.
My qualifications include an MSC in Computer Science and a PGCE from Plymouth University. Recently, I have undertaken several courses to enable me to teach English.
I enjoy teaching and watching students gain in confidence.
