Basic Computer skills for jobseekers

Who is this course for?

Designed for learners who have been signposted to improve their ICT skills by their Job Centre adviser. This course is for those who would benefit from a less intensive course spread over a longer time period due to their lack of previous experience with computers and/or additional learning needs. 

Course content

You will: 

Know how to stay safe when using a computer for job searching 

Improve your mouse and keyboard skills 

Use a word processor to create documents 

Use the spelling and grammar check tools 

Use the various formatting facilities on a word processor to make changes to your documents 

Create a cover letter and/or CV and know how to save/print different versions 

Know how to use a browser/search engine 

Set up and use an email account  

Send and receive emails (including attachments) 

Create and use an account on the Find a Job website 

Upload your CV to your Find a Job account  

Carry out job searches on the Find a Job website 

Save job searches in your Find a Job account 

Set up email alerts within Find a Job 

Understand the different methods of applying for jobs online 

Use online form features such as check boxes and drop-down menus  

Use other job search sites to search for jobs in your area of interest 

Support and feedback

Your tutor will give you support and feedback throughout the course 

Additional costs and requirements

There are no entry requirements and everything you need will be provided. If you already have a CV please bring it with you. 

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

You may need to gather information of past employment and education if you do not already have an up-to-date CV. 

About the tutor

Caroline Gale has worked for Learn Devon for over 20 years in a variety of roles. She has also been involved in research, industry, running a rural business and the voluntary sector.  

She enjoys the challenge of developing methods of teaching and learning for those who may previously have been unable to achieve using conventional techniques. She believes that people generally learn best when they are enjoying themselves and in a relaxed and supportive environment.
