ESOL - Speaking and listening
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who does not speak English as a first language and would like to begin to learn to communicate with confidence in English.
This course will also help you communicate in all aspects of life in the UK such as employment, healthcare, travelling on public transport and British culture and will give you confidence speaking and listening in your everyday life. You will talk to others in your group and practise pronunciation at your level and learn to present yourself with self-assurance. You will meet new people from different countries and cultures, so it could be an excellent opportunity to make new friends.
Support and feedback
Your tutor will continually assess you and provide you with verbal and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and by discussion in your classes. You will then have the opportunity take assessments at a level suited to you with Gateway qualifications in speaking, listening & communication.
Additional costs and requirements
This course is free. To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Support Coordinators. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that you are placed on the correct qualification suited to your skill level. Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
This course is free and available online, so you will need a laptop, or tablet, with a camera and microphone and reliable internet access, to take part in the course.

“How will I learn?
Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. The classes will be interactive and the tutors will use a variety of online learning resources, including games and activities to support your speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. You will be taught by supportive and friendly ESOL tutors who provide lots of practical help, guidance and support. Your tutor may also suggest activities you can outside of the class to support your learning.
Resources and additional information
You will need a pen, pencil, eraser and a notebook. An English dictionary or a bilingual dictionary (in your first language) would also be useful.
What can I do next?
ESOL (all levels) online will lead to taking speaking, listening and communication, reading and writing ESOL qualifications at a level suited to you, accredited by Gateway Qualifications**. You will then be able to progress to higher levels of ESOL qualifications, ESOL Maths Skills, ESOL Digital Skills and ESOL learning for work courses with Learn Devon. ”
