Who is this course for?
This course is offered online to support continued learning during lockdown.
Please note if/when lockdown is lifted this course may be redirected to face to face learning. The time and day will remain the same, along with your tutor.
The venue for direct learning will be online.
This course is for anyone wanting to improve their English language skills. This can range from entry level all the way up to Level 2 qualifications. You can enrol at any time throughout the year and our tutors will tailor your learning exactly around your needs. This is a very flexible course, you will work at your own pace and you will be set your own goals. There will be lots of progression opportunities available to you along the way.
We encourage anyone to enrol who wants to improve their English, whether that’s to help their children with their homework, to gain a qualification for further studies or just to brush up on their skills. This course will help you boost your employment opportunities and prepare you for further study.
As the course covers different qualification levels the content will be designed to meet your exact needs. This will include the skills of communication, reading and writing.
Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. You will also be using a computer to do some research, reading and other activities to enhance your study experience. We encourage you to regularly attend our classes and to spend some extra time on self-study at home.
Support and feedback
Our tutors are supportive and friendly, they work with our learning support assistants who are at hand to help you with any learning difficulties or disabilities. Your progress will be tracked, and you will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning. Using a tailored learning plan our tutors will provide you with feedback to help you achieve your learning goals.
Additional costs and requirements
We will signpost you to the text books, dictionaries, and any other reading materials you may need. You will need to bring along an A4 file, writing materials and lined paper to your classes.
To enrol in this course, you will first need to meet with one of our friendly Learning Support Coordinators. Through a skills check they will make sure that this is the right course for you. To make an appointment with our team please contact your local Learn Devon centre.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
To achieve your learning goals, we will encourage you to do weekly homework. This will help you practise, enhance your progression and will often involve exploring topics for discussion.
About the tutor
Jenni Marshall works as a tutor for Learn Devon, teaching Literacy, ESOL French and Spanish Tutor for Learn Devon. Prior to this she worked for Cornwall Adult Education Service, Abingdon, and Witney & Oxon College also teaching the aforementioned subjects. Within the literacy programmes taught, she delivered Key Skills, Skills for Life and also Communication to recovering Drug and Alcohol users.
Jenni commenced full time teaching 2003. Prior to that, she taught English as a Foreign Language both privately and also for SUL Language School. She has also taught Elective Home Education students for 10 years following both the British and American curriculums.
Jenni has an Honours Degree in Humanities where she majored in English Language/English Literature from The Open University, A PGCE from University of Greenwich and amongst other specialist qualifications, a Level 5 Subject Specialism in Literacy inc ESOL. Jenni’s area of interest is Applied Linguistics which she will further study in a Masters of Applied Linguistics.
Jenni’s passion is equipping others with the necessary tools to ensure that they realise their dreams. She is a great advocate of education as the means to do this.
