This course is for adults who have not already achieved a GCSE in English Language A*-C grade. It can help to enhance career prospects, access to higher or further education, support the family with their English skills or improve skills for personal reasons.
The course follows the syllabus for the OCR GCSE English Language, 9-1 series (2015). The latest GCSEs have a new grading system from 1 to 9. Your tutor will explain this in more detail.
You will develop your skills in understanding, analysing and interpreting a variety of texts.
Developing the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when writing.
Learning how to use a wide variety of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
Developing a personal style of written communication.
It is essential that you can commit to weekly attendance as well as completing weekly homework, to succeed.
The course will start tutor add day, date, times w/c.
Sessions are [fill in details] hours weekly.
There are 4 mandatory introduction sessions totaling 10-12 guided learning hours; this is a requirement prior to access onto the full GCSE programme, which is up to 90 guided learning hours. This will determine whether you continue with the GCSE or move on to a Functional Skills qualification. Dates for some sessions will be agreed within the learning group, to ensure the total learning hours.

Support and feedback
You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning. An individual learning plan will be used to record your targets and achievements. These can be used to predict end grades.

You will need basic equipment pen, pencil & notebook.
We will provide you with the text books for the duration of the course.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Weekly homework will be used to practise, check understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on progress. It is essential that you commit to completing this each week as well as any missed sessions.
About the tutor
Jenni Marshall works as a tutor for Learn Devon, teaching Literacy, ESOL French and Spanish Tutor for Learn Devon. Prior to this she worked for Cornwall Adult Education Service, Abingdon, and Witney & Oxon College also teaching the aforementioned subjects. Within the literacy programmes taught, she delivered Key Skills, Skills for Life and also Communication to recovering Drug and Alcohol users.
Jenni commenced full time teaching 2003. Prior to that, she taught English as a Foreign Language both privately and also for SUL Language School. She has also taught Elective Home Education students for 10 years following both the British and American curriculums.
Jenni has an Honours Degree in Humanities where she majored in English Language/English Literature from The Open University, A PGCE from University of Greenwich and amongst other specialist qualifications, a Level 5 Subject Specialism in Literacy inc ESOL. Jenni’s area of interest is Applied Linguistics which she will further study in a Masters of Applied Linguistics.
Jenni’s passion is equipping others with the necessary tools to ensure that they realise their dreams. She is a great advocate of education as the means to do this.
