Preparation for GCSE English

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at adults who wish to join a GCSE English course in September 2020 but have not recently studied English and wish to brush up on their basic literacy skills.

It will also introduce some GCSE-specific topics, and prepare learners with the study skills required for the intensive one-year GCSE English course

Course content

We will look at the requirements of GCSE and consider the writing section, the reading section and also the speaking & listening element. We will look at using language specific vocabulary, compare texts and ways to develop writing in line with GCSE requirements.

Support and feedback

The tutor will provide personalised support as required. and give feedback, both written and verbal, during the session.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Effective learning requires practice and reinforcement so on occasions you may be provided with short homework tasks to help consolidate the work done in the weekly session. You will also be encouraged to make use of other resources such as internet websites, links and clips for self-study activities.

About the tutor

Your tutor will be Rosemary Dymond. Rosemary has worked as an English tutor for Learn Devon since 2005. She also works for the Open University as an Arts and Languages Associate Lecturer. Apart from teaching, Rosemary has many hobbies, including calligraphy and archaeology – where she regularly takes part in digs. Rosemary is also an active member of the ‘Up Close’ Theatre Group and can be often seen on stage.

Rosemary enjoys teaching because she feels that life is a continual journey of discovery – we are never too old to learn and move forward! She loves working with people to enable them to achieve and gain a sense of fulfilment and make a real difference to people’s lives.
