Who is this course for?

This course is for adults who have not already achieved a GCSE in English Language A*-C grade. It can help to enhance career prospects, access to higher or further education, support the family with their English skills or improve skills for personal reasons.
The course follows the syllabus for the OCR GCSE English Language, 9-1 series (2015). The latest GCSEs have a new grading system from 1 to 9. Your tutor will explain this in more detail.
The course is fast track and requires attendance on both Monday and Wednesday evenings. You will develop your skills in understanding, analysing and interpreting a variety of texts.
Developing the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when writing.
Learning how to use a wide variety of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
Developing a personal style of written communication.
It is essential that you can commit to weekly attendance as well as completing weekly homework, to succeed.
The course will start tutor add day, date, times w/c.
Sessions are 3 hours twice weekly (Monday and Wednesday evenings).
There are 4 mandatory introduction sessions totaling 10-12 guided learning hours; this is a requirement prior to access onto the full GCSE programme, which is up to 90 guided learning hours. This will determine whether you continue with the GCSE or move on to a Functional Skills qualification. Dates for some sessions will be agreed within the learning group, to ensure the total learning hours.

Tuesday 4th June 2019 AM
Friday 7th June 2019 AM
All exams will be held at the Alexander Centre in Tavistock.
Support and feedback
You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning. An individual learning plan will be used to record your targets and achievements. These can be used to predict end grades.
Additional costs and requirements
We will provide you with what you need to complete the course.
You will need basic equipment pen, pencil & notebook.
We will provide you with the text books for the duration of the course.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Weekly homework will be used to practise, check understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on progress. It is essential that you commit to completing this each week as well as any missed sessions.
About the tutor
Isabel Knockaert started working for Learn Devon in 2007 and currently specialises in ESOL, Literacy and Functional Skills English. Prior to this she has taught in different countries including Poland and Belgium. Isabel gained her first degree in 2005 after having studied English pedagogy, British and American literature, applied linguistics and methodology of language teaching. She gained her Masters of Education in Applied Linguistics graduating from the Open University in 2013. Isabel is passionate about helping her learners to work hard and achieve their goals whilst embarking on relevant but enjoyable learning.
