You can only enrol on this course through a friendly chat and skills check with an experienced Learn Devon Learning Support Co-ordinator.

This course will enable you to improve your English under the tuition of a qualified English teacher who will assist you with learning at your own pace and enable you to set your own goals. Progression opportunities will be available.

The course requires regular attendance and extra work at home.

Course content

Would like to improve your English and communication skills? You will learn reading, writing, spelling and speaking skills such as taking part in a discussion.

Support and feedback

We have an Individual Learning Plan which is completed by you and the tutor so that you can see how you are improving towards your goals.

Additional costs and requirements

Bring a pen and paper with you and a folder to take your work home. There are no entry requirements but you will take an assessment during the first class to find out how you can improve.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Yes, you might need to do some work at home such as learn spellings or do a short piece of writing.

About the tutor

Maureen Williams currently works as an ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages), English and Employability tutor for Learn Devon. She also works as an ESOL tutor for Exeter College. In addition she is internal verifier for the ESOL exams. Prior to this Maureen was headteacher at Vranch House Special School in Exeter.

Maureen has two Masters degrees in the field of education and educational research. She is also a published author of books on dyspraxia.
