Course content

Once the starting level and your learning aims have been established, you will be engaged in a range of activities designed to target the areas of both written and spoken means of communication as appropriate to your needs, for example reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction or ways of adapting the language to specific audiences. You will also explore a variety of everyday text types in a relevant and challenging way. These might be formal and informal letters and emails, formal reports, speeches, formal and informal spoken exchanges, leaflets, advertising documents or newspaper/magazine articles. Time will be made for you to participate in whole group and small group activities as well as complete tasks individually. You will be encouraged to use ICT to support your learning and develop new skills.

Support and feedback

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor. At the end of every session there will be an opportunity to reflect on progress made and areas that still require some practice. Record of this will be kept in your Individual Learning Plan. Both classwork and homework will be used to assess how well you are progressing towards your goals.

Additional costs and requirements

You will need: a pen, A4 lined paper, a folder or a binder to keep your work in and a pack of highlighters. You might find it useful to bring your own dictionary or thesaurus with you as well.

It is important that you commit to attending every week and keep in touch about the sessions you can’t make. There will be no classes in the school holidays.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Yes. Effective learning requires regular practice and, therefore, you might be asked to complete up to an hour’s homework every week.

“I’m a great believer in ‘experiential learning’, and firmly believe that people learn by doing. This is so important, particularly with a subject like ICT; it is the familiarity with everyday computing tasks that build on a person’s levels of confidence and skills.”

“Despite my technical background I hate jargon: There is nothing I enjoy more than to clarify some of the gobbledygook and mythology that surround the subject of information technology.”
