Who is this course for?

This free course is open to all eligible learners. You work at your own pace and level, progressing onto the next stage, when ready. The course can cover several levels between entry 1 and level 2.
You will practise everyday reading, writing and communication. This includes work on spelling, punctuation and grammar, writing for everyday use (eg filling in applications), reading texts (e.g. newspapers) and communicating well in everyday situations (e.g. telephone conversations). You will learn with a group of people who have the same needs and interests but work to your own personal learning plan, which includes what you want to be able to do.
Support and feedback
The learning plan is tailored to suit your needs and there are lots of chances to talk to your tutor and record your progress and needs.
Additional costs and requirements
You should bring a notebook/notepaper and pen. The course is not suitable for ESOL learners.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Yes effective learning requires regular practice at home. Your tutor will set short homework tasks to help you practise the work covered in the weekly session. You will be encouraged to make use of other resources, such as internet websites, links and clips for self-study activities.
About the tutor
Rosemary Dymond, works as an Area Tutor (Literacy) for Learn Devon and is based in northern Devon. She has worked in an Area Tutor capacity since its inception in 2011. Prior to this she taught English, ALDD and also Family Learning classes for DACL on a sessional basis for six years. She also works as an arts and languages tutor with the Open University.
Rosemary has a Masters Degree in Education from The Open University and a BA in Humanities from The Open University. She also has a Post Graduate Certificate of Education – Post compulsory Education, L4 Adult Literacy Specialism, and QTLS status.
