Who is this course for?

Passmore Edwards Centre, Newton Abbot on Tuesday 22nd August

The Mansion, Totnes on Monday 21st August.

This course is free for adults who have not achieved a GCSE in English Language A*-C grade previously. It can help to enhance career prospects, access higher or further education, support the family with their English skills or improve your skills for your own personal reasons.

Course content

The course follows the syllabus for the OCR GCSE English Language (2015). The latest GCSEs have a new grading system from 1 to 9, with Grade C equating to a new Grade 4. Full details of the new grading system are available on the

Ofqual website.

You will learn to

• Read a wide range of texts from different genres including prose fiction, literary non-fiction and other non-fiction texts such as articles, biographies and travel writing.
• Analyse how writers use language and structure to convey their ideas to the reader.
• Write effectively, creatively and imaginatively, using a wide vocabulary with a clear awareness of audience and purpose.
• Speak clearly on a topic of choice using an appropriate structure and varied vocabulary.
The new syllabus is split into two equal areas of study: non- fiction and fiction.

Examinations may be held in a different venue in Newton Abbot. There are two exams scheduled for Tuesday 5 June and Friday 8 June, both are at 9.30-11.30am.

Support and feedback

You will learn in small supportive groups (6 -12 people). You will be able to discuss ideas with others and complete tasks individually, in pairs or small groups. Activities will be tailored to different styles of learning, with a range of learning resources available.

You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning. An individual learning plan is updated weekly to record your targets and achievements. There are regular assessments throughout the course which will be used to predict your final level. In addition, weekly homework is set to practise skills, check understanding and provide feedback on progress.

Additional costs and requirements

You can only enrol on this course once you have had an initial assessment with an experienced Learn Devon Tutor to determine which course is most suitable for your needs.

In addition to pens and pencils you will need an A4 course folder and lined paper.

You will need to buy two text books, cost approximately £30 for both. However, please don’t make a purchase until after you have started the course, and discussed this with your tutor.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Weekly homework will be set to practise skills, check understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on progress.

Simonetta Cooke, Area Tutor (English and ESOL)

Helping people to feel confident about using English in their everyday lives is important to Kate.

“As adults, we often really worry about our English skills and it can stop us doing what we want to in life. It’s great to see how quickly people learn and start to take pride in their improved reading or writing skills and how this leads to other things: a new job, a new hobby or simply enjoying a good book.”
