This free course is open to eligible adult learners who have not already achieved a GCSE in English Language A*-C grade. It can help to enhance career prospects, access to higher or further education, support the family with their English skills or improve skills for personal reasons. The course follows the syllabus for the OCR GCSE English Language, 9-1 series (2015). The latest GCSEs have a new grading system from 1 to 9. Your tutor will explain this in more detail. Course content

You will develop your skills in understanding, analysing and interpreting a variety of texts.

• Developing the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when writing.
• Learning how to use a wide variety of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Developing a personal style of written communication.
An A4 course folder, lined paper, dividers, pens and pencils, a dictionary, a thesaurus and a pack of highlighters.

There will be 2 text books that you will require and we can get these for you at a reduced rate.

Support and feedback

There will be support and feedback from your tutor. You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning. You’ll use an individual learning plan to record your targets, progress and achievements. These can be used to predict end grades.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Weekly homework will be used to practice, check understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on progress. It is essential to complete this.

About the tutor

Lorraine has worked for Devon County for 22 years starting as a Playworker at Toddler groups and working her way to being a Tutor in Maths, English and Family Learning. Over the years Lorraine has been on funding committees, set up and run Pilot projects for setting up family workshops in deprived and rural areas, a project worker setting up courses in schools and other venues, part of 2 Government Literacy projects to promote helping Adults in Schools to learn to show how this then helps the children and Lorraine has also taken part in the excellence programmes for teaching both Mathematics and English. Lorraine also has qualifications in teaching for behavioural support and has been on Dyslexia awareness training. Lorraine has her C&G 7407 in Teaching and studied both Cert Ed, DTTLS and an English Specialism.
