Digital photography workshop

Passmore Edwards Centre, Newton Abbot

Who is this course for?

A short introductory workshop to develop your photography skills and be creative with your camera. This short course of 2 hours is an ideal ‘Taster Session’ for beginners or those with a bit of experience. The aim is to get out of ‘taking snaps’ in automatic mode- and learn about creating meaningful photos. The camera is a tool, this course will show you how to get start getting the best out of it.

Time will be spent doing outdoor photography experience of the local landscape itself and the interactions of people within it and an opportunity to do characterful outdoor portraits.

Course content

• Learning to ‘see’ rather than just look!
• How to control Aperture & Exposure
• Depth of field
• Understanding Histograms (for getting ‘good’ exposures)

The aim to is help you use this tool to develop the way you can aim each time to make an expressive response to the world before your eyes – to consider light, shadows, natural textures, form, framing and more – to help you learn some of the skills to make photographs you are proud of.

Support and feedback

Students are invited to bring in at least 2 or 3 prints of photographs with them as a mini portfolio for review and peer discussion in this session. There will be opportunities for reviewing photographs during the course.

Additional costs and requirements

Whilst any camera will do, ideally you will gain the most from bringing either:

• a compact camera (in which aperture and exposure length can be adjusted);
• a bridge camera; a Compact System Camera (CSC);
• or Digital SLR camera.
• Great images can still be made with many modern smartphone’s in-built cameras and tablet computers.
Comfortable footwear and a waterproof coat are recommended for our outdoor-based photography.

Please bring your camera user guide / handbook (that came with your camera – very helpful for finding certain functions that may be ‘hidden’ within the various menu options)

Graduated Neutral Density & Polarizing filters may be useful if you have them (Please don’t worry if you don’t have any of these!)

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Not Applicable on this Taster Session
