Kennaway Centre, Exmouth

Who is this course for?

This is a course for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. If you are being supported on a day-to-day basis and hope to be more independent in your daily life, then this course is for you.

Course content

Practising English and maths skills through a variety of activities, often as a group. This short course will assess your individual needs and levels in preparation for the longer qualification course.

Learning is in a safe, friendly and relaxed environment, amongst friends.

Support and feedback

Support is given by the tutor, the learner support worker, and by fellow students. Feedback is constant.

Additional costs and requirements

A pen and pencil are useful but most resources are provided; only a willing learner is essential! The only entry requirements are recognised difficulties in these skills.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Practising basic functional skills in everyday life is always helpful, but there is not normally homework as such.

About the tutor

Lindsey Tucker is an experienced, well-qualified teacher who enjoys helping others develop and practise their functional skills of literacy and numeracy within a friendly environment.

Her main job is with students at Bicton College but Lindsey treasures her teaching of adults for Learn Devon at The Kennaway Centre, which dates back to the mid-eighties. Since then she has taught various courses in a wide range of subjects, reflecting her own diverse interests and qualifications. It is this love of learning that she hopes to convey to learners.

“Learning truly is a lifelong process and it is never too late to develop and/or expand an interest. Age and ‘ability’ need not prevent learning; only a closed mind can do that.”
