Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for anyone who is being supported on a day-to-day basis but who is hoping to be more independent in their daily life and wishes to explore and improve their English skills.
The course will cover a variety of literacy and ICT topics. These could include developing communication skills, reading and writing. You may also work on improving your ability with ICT/computers. You will work at your own level on a programme that meets your needs and interests. In some instances, it is possible to work towards English qualifications. Please talk to your tutor if you are interested in doing this.
Support and feedback
Your tutor will give you written and verbal feedback on your progress during the course and tell you what you need to do to improve your English and ICT skills
Additional costs and requirements
If you go on a trip to outside venues, you may need money for entrance fees or travel costs. You will be told about them in advance. You should bring a notebook and pen. You may need money to buy a drink at break time.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
You will not need to do anything in your own time but you will make more progress if you can practice what you have learned at home
About the tutor
Caroline Gale has worked for Learn Devon for the past 18 years in a variety of roles and has chosen to specialise in teaching adults with a range of learning difficulties, disabilities and/or mental health problems. She is currently an ALDD tutor. Prior to this, she has taught all age groups and abilities from preschool up to university level and has been involved in research, industry and running a rural business.
Caroline has a selection of scientific degrees (up to Ph.D. level) plus a PGCE and she gained Qualified Teacher Status in 1986. She has also taken various masters level modules in special education needs both through the University of Plymouth and the Open University. Recently she has enhanced her knowledge and understanding of the use of technology in supporting learning through a range of online courses.
‘I enjoy the challenge of developing methods of teaching and learning for those who may previously have been unable to achieve using conventional techniques. My expectations are always very high and I endeavour to enable my learners to gain both skills and confidence. I prefer to consider people’s different abilities rather than their disabilities.’
