Who is this course for?

A 3-part course for anyone who has an interest in gaining a basic knowledge of contemporary Floral Design techniques and materials. Create floral designs for your home or gifts. For all abilities.

Course content

You will learn how to make a circular shaped Wreath design made with plant stems, flowers, leaves, seed heads and assorted decorative items.

You will learn how to make a living moss ball plant design called a Kokedama.

You will learn how to make a table centrepiece design called a Kusamono.

You will learn how to keep the plants in your floral designs healthy.

You will choose your own personal aim related to the course theme so that you can explore your own ideas.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course via the online sessions. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course. You will receive feedback on your progress and suggestions as to how to improve.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone / headphones and a good internet connection.

You will need to provide your own materials.

“How will I learn?

You will be working with your tutor and other learners using an online video platform called Zoom. Your course will include practical tasks and discussions and your tutor will support you throughout. You may wish to continue work between the sessions. This will help you to get the best from the course and to progress at a pace you are comfortable with.

Equipment list:

Week 1

Notebook and pen

Sketchbook or sheets of drawing paper.

Pencil, pens, coloured pencils

Ruler

Pencil sharpener

Eraser

Waterproof gloves

A circular wire frame (or a wire coat hanger)

Plant stems (from your garden, foraged or purchased)

At least 9 x flowers with their stems,

At least 20 x evergreen plant stems with their leaves

Your choice of plant Seed heads on their stems (optional)

Moss (3 x A4 sized approximately)

Your choice of additional decorations (optional)

Ball of garden string or soft wire

Scissors to cut the wire and string.

Secateurs to cut the plant material.

Mobile phone

Week 2

Waterproof gloves

A washing up bowl or bucket for practical activities

Potting compost (min 5 litres)

Moss (3 x A4 sized approximately)

Ball of garden string or soft wire

At least 3 small house plants (or could be outdoor alpine/small plants from your garden)

Notebook and pen

Sketchbook or sheets of drawing paper.

Pencil, pens, coloured pencils

Ruler

Pencil sharpener

Eraser

Week 3

Waterproof gloves

One decorative display dish at least 10cm in depth

10 x evergreen or bare plant stems from your garden.

Moss (3 x A4 sized approximately)

Decorative natural stones or other decorations

Ball of garden string or soft wire

Scissors to cut the wire and string.

Secateurs to cut the plant material.
