Who is this course for?

This is a three-part course for personal interest course. Gain a basic knowledge of calligraphy and then create a poetry poster and cards. This course is aimed at any level, from beginner onwards.

Course content

You will enjoy learning the basics of how to create beautiful handwriting.

You will learn how to practise some letter forms to build your confidence.

You will learn how to apply your skills to create a poetry poster and cards.

You will choose your own personal aim related to the course theme so that you can explore your own ideas.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course via the online sessions. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course. You will receive feedback on your progress and suggestions as to how to improve.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone / headphones and a good internet connection.

You will need to provide your own materials.

“How will I learn?

You will be working with your tutor and other learners using an online video platform called Zoom. Your course will include practical tasks and discussions and your tutor will support you throughout. You may wish to continue work between the sessions. This will help you to get the best from the course and to progress at a pace you are comfortable with.

Equipment list:

Calligraphy pens with different nib types: fine/italic/broad. Or try a traditional pen holder with different nibs set.

Writing inks, ink pots, palette tray/plastic plate

A feather

Paper, cardboard, blank cards, envelopes

Tracing paper

Masking Tape

Drawing pencils and scrap practice paper

Ruler

Scissors

Other colour media such as watercolours and brushes, coloured pencils.

The text (written out or printed) of your favourite poem.

Magnifying Glass/Mobile phone

What can I do next

You may like to enrol on the Contemporary Floral Design Course with Learn Devon. You may like to join an online art or design group or one that meets locally to you. Explore your local library for more poetry to read and groups to attend.

Your tutor will suggest ideas on what you can practice and how to build on what you have learnt. They will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning.
