Pottery: beginners

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for beginners in working with clay. It is for those who want to start to explore working with clay.

Course content

You will be learning about the basic properties of clay and how to prepare it, hand techniques including modelling and building, using the potter’s wheel, decorative techniques, uses of glazes and slips, tools, tips and techniques for a variety of clay projects, information about how clay work is fired in a kiln.

There will be the opportunity to explore your own ideas and follow set practical tasks.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you during the course. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course. You will receive regular feedback on your progress and suggestions as to how to improve.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

You will need old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and/or an apron. An old towel is also a good idea to bring for covering your knees when at the wheel and wiping your hands.

How will I learn?

You will be working with your tutor and other learners in our newly refurbished art and ceramics room in The Alexander centre in Tavistock.

Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course with discussions and feedback on your progress where appropriate. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure the course.
