Advanced casement binding

Who is this course for?

This is a course that is suitable for those with some binding experience, who want to learn more traditional Casement binding skills.

Course content

This three-week course you will give you a solid grounding to continue developing binding skills that can be applied to repairing old books.

You will learn how to prepare your materials and sew a rounded casement book. During this process you will learn to sew on to tapes to create a quarter-bound book.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course via the classroom sessions and email between sessions.

You will set individual goals as part of a brief pre-course questionnaire and revisit this at the end.

You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course. You will receive feedback on your progress and suggestions as to how to improve. 

Additional costs and requirements

This course is suitable for those with some previous bookbinding experience.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Basic materials and tools are available to complete your projects, but you may want to bring your own specific specialist papers if you are working on a more personal project.

How will I learn?

You will be working with your tutor and other learners in a classroom at the centre. Your course will be largely focused on practical work, with opportunities for discussions and your tutor will support you throughout. You may wish to work on personal projects between the sessions and your Tutor can offer support and advice to facilitate this. This will help you reinforce learned skills and to progress at a pace you are comfortable with.
