Who is this course for?
This course may suit you if you are interested in learning about creative activities. This is a short interactive online live course aimed at building your skills and knowledge in creative activities. It will include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course. Suitable for those with some experience using a sewing machine.
You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment online class using an online video platform called Zoom (an online digital video tool). You will be accompanied in your virtual class with other learners who will be joining the online session. You will be cutting out, sewing and finishing an envelop style cushion cover. Potential to use a selection of decorative techniques including applique and machine embroidery to personalise your project, and to choose from different fastening options. Complete cushion cover can be made in a day, working at your own pace, interacting with the tutor and group online at intervals and as wanted.
Support and feedback
Your tutor will support you throughout the course through online face to face and feedback on your progress and suggestions on how to progress. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course. Demonstration and instruction from tutor. One to one support as appropriate. Ongoing review of tasks and outcomes through discussion with tutor and group. Informal talks and feedback and a short learning plan to complete
Additional costs and requirements
You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection. Sewing machine (but you can sew by hand) Selection of fabric, reuse where possible scrap fabrics, old clothes etc. Calico ½ metre Bondaweb, thread embroidery scissors, Fabric scissors, seam ripper/stitch unpick and pins.
Needle, Needle threader, Tape measure, These may be items you already have at home or can be purchased online.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Your tutor will give you some ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning.
About the tutor
Our tutors are friendly and approachable, very supportive and understanding and are all highly experienced and skilled in supporting adults from all backgrounds to learn new skills. Franca Westaway has been teaching art and design since she came to the South West in the 1990s. Franca is passionate about helping others to gain creative skills and confidence, whatever their area of interest. She has a wide range of experience both in schools and with people of all ages within the community and is particularly keen on 3D and practical techniques across many materials and disciplines, as well as the use of art for personal development and expression and as a therapeutic tool
