Who is this course for?

This course may suit you if you have an interest in learning about how to use your sewing machine with confidence for a variety of tasks and self-generated projects.

These are short interactive online live courses aimed at building your skills and knowledge for developing your understanding around sewing and textiles If you have any fabrics or even old clothes that you would like to use for this project please come prepared with these.

Use of and some experience with your own sewing machine is necessary. They include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course.

This course is suitable for anyone who has some confidence about basic use of a sewing machine and would like to extend their skills

Course content

You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom.  You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners. Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course.

You will be exploring a variety of set tasks in order to reach a level of confidence when using a sewing machine for a variety of dressmaking or home textile projects – including understanding how to use a commercial dressmaking pattern, uses of different fabrics as well as processes including facings, waistbands, pockets, cuffs and collars, inset sleeves and sleeve heads, fitting adjustments in dressmaking, fastenings, finishes and tips for home textile projects.

NB: This is not a curtain/blind making course.

There will be the opportunity to explore your own ideas and follow set practical tasks.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course through online face to face discussions and feedback on your progress where appropriate. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course.

Additional costs and requirements

You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.

You will need use of a working sewing machine, fabrics (use of something stable like a medium weight cotton/polycotton woven cloth like 1 metre of plain cotton calico – or, recycling old material can be good for sample work, something like an old sheet, pillowcase or duvet cover would be great), scissors, thread, notepad and pen/pencil. You may wish to use a commercial dressmaking pattern to work on the production of a garment.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Your tutor will suggest ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning.

The tutor may set some optional tasks for individuals or the whole group, both within the sessions and to do in your own time.

About the tutor

Franca Westaway has been teaching art and design since she came to the South West in the 1990s. Franca is passionate about helping others to gain creative skills and confidence, whatever their area of interest. She has a wide range of experience both in schools and with people of all ages within the community and is particularly keen on 3D and practical techniques across many materials and disciplines, as well as the use of art for personal development and expression and as a therapeutic tool.
