Who is this course for?

Do you like flowers and brooches? Do you enjoying creating beautiful handmade gifts or treasures? Would you like to learn more about traditional Japanese folding techniques?

If so, this sounds like a workshop you will enjoy.

Come along and learn how to fold and sew fabric into a beautiful kanzashi brooch.

Course content

You will be guided through the process needed to fold cotton fabric into beautiful kanzashi flowers, that can be worn as a brooch.

The session is designed to promote sharing ideas in a supportive setting where your creativity will unfold, and you will be proud of your handiwork.

All that is left is to decide what fabric to use and where you will wear your brooch, or who you will give it to.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course.

Additional costs and requirements

This course is delivered online and provided free of charge. You will, however, need a computer or a tablet with a stable internet connection, as well as a built in or external microphone and camera to attend the course.

You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom.  You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners.

To be able to take part in online learning you will be sent a zoom invitation with your access code.

There are no additional costs.

You will need to provide your own resources as listed below:-

Cotton fabric, at least A4 size.

3 or 4 buttons, various sizes.

Fabric cutting scissors.

Dress making pins or fabric clips.

Needle and strong thread.

Brooch back or safety pin.

Small piece of felt, 5cm squared.

Glue gun and glue sticks.

About the tutor

Your tutor will be Amanda Barrud.

Amanda teaches across a broad curriculum including craft and Family Learning, in addition to Independent Living and Life Skills to adults with learning disabilities. Before taking up employment with Learn Devon in 2002, Amanda worked for the Kent Institute of Art and Design after graduating from the University of Kent with a degree in Psychology.

Her approach to teaching is to provide a supportive environment to encourage experimentation, the trying out of new ideas to enable learners to be challenged. She is reputed to be patient, and eager to explore new techniques and materials to enthuse and inspire her classes.

A mother of 4 children and 1 grandchild, Amanda believes that her life experience has had a positive impact on her teaching. She also works for Mencap, coordinating events and activities for adults with learning disabilities in North Devon.
