Introduction to hand embroidery and applique: FULL
Who is this course for?
This course may suit you if you have an interest in learning about creating textured pictures using hand embroidery and applique.
These are short interactive online live courses aimed at building your skills and knowledge for developing your understanding around applique. They include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course.
This course is suitable for beginners.
You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom. You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners. Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course.
This workshop will cover techniques for creating a picture using scraps of material which will be secured onto your backing fabric with hand stitching. You will then use some simple embroidery stitches to add details to your picture. This technique produces a ‘sketchy’ and expressive composition.
Additional costs and requirements
This course is delivered online and provided free of charge. You will, however, need a computer or a tablet with a stable internet connection, as well as a built in or external microphone and camera to attend the course.
You will need the following resources:
Cream/white backing fabric approx. 30cm square. Sewing/embroidery needle(s). Neutral (grey, cream) sewing thread, embroidery thread – black and a few other colours. Pieces/strips of assorted fabrics (old clothing such as shirts, dresses, curtain fabric etc would be suitable). A FriXion/erasable pen, fabric pen or if not a pencil.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
You can practise the techniques learned between the sessions.
