Who is this course for?

This course may suit you if you have some experience of accessing the internet, going online and have an interest in learning about your own creativity and wellbeing.

This is a short interactive online live course aimed at building your skills and knowledge of the course theme and an understanding of how creative activity can improve your wellbeing. The course includes practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course.

This course is for beginners and those who would like to refresh their floristry skills.

This course is offered online to support continued learning during lockdown.

Please note if/when lockdown is lifted this course may be redirected to face to face learning.

The time and day will remain the same, along with your tutor.

The venue for direct learning will be online.

Course content

You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment online class using an online video platform called Zoom (an online digital video tool). You will be accompanied in your virtual class with other learners who will be joining the online session. Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course. Where physical activity is part of the course you will complete a short health and safety questionnaire prior to the start of the course.

Enjoy learning the basics of how to create a floral design to decorate your home. Gather your favourite flowers and foliage from your garden ready for this relaxing course. Practise different traditional and contemporary styles of floral design to build your confidence and develop new skills. Then create your unique floral design to display inside or outside your home. Please bring along three examples of your favourite floristry, in the form of print outs or on your phone or iPad.

Additional costs and requirements

1. You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.

2. Pencil and paper/sketchbook.

3. Your choice of fresh flowers and foliage from your garden or local florist.

4. 3 different containers: tall, low and mid height.

5. Chicken wire (approx. ½ metre x ½ metre sq)

6. Plenty of old newspaper.

7. Floristry wire or garden twine

8. Gloves.

9. Secateurs or scissors.

10. Optional: Additional decorative embellishments of your choice e.g. ribbon.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

It will not be necessary to do anything in your own time

About the tutor

With Deborah as your tutor, expect enthusiasm and passion for the subjects’ taught, in a calming, inclusive, fun and inspiring environment. You will have time to enjoy the creative process, learn new skills, improve your mental and physical wellbeing and gain motivation to progress and achieve your personal best.

Deborah graduated from Saint Martin’s School of Art with a BA (Hons) Degree in Graphic Design and also achieved an MA Degree in Graphic Design, at Central Saint Martin’s. She has gained many unique experiences, collaborating with other artists and designers.

Deborah is from the West Country, where she runs her own Art, Craft, Design and Horticulture business. She is a practising artist, designer and gallery owner. She has exhibited and sold art work in the South West of England, Scotland and London.

She has recently won a Gold Award for Garden Design and has created Art and Design work for the BBC and MTV. She has also worked at the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Deborah has been interviewed on BBC Radio about her creative approach to teaching courses, where she passionately promotes the creative use and benefits of sustainable materials, especially plants. Her Sketch, Sculpt and Plant Walks are multi-sensory and interactive in the natural environment. Her work transcends the boundaries of genre and media: it’s thought-provoking work about the pressing concerns of the day and is often refreshingly humorous.

Deborah has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, from the University of London, Institute of Education, specialising in Art and Design. She is a qualified teacher of Art, Craft, Design and Horticulture. She has taught learners of all ages and abilities, for many years. She has been a Head of Art and Design. She teaches across Primary, Secondary, Alternative Provision, and Adult and Community education.
