Who is this course for?

This course may suit you if you have an interest in learning about creative, practical ways to re-use plastic.

These are short interactive online live courses aimed at building your skills and knowledge for developing your understanding around papercraft techniques. They include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course.

This course is suitable for anyone including beginners.

Course content

You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom. You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners. Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback, and will support you throughout the course.

You will make and learn about practical bags using easy fusing and sewing techniques. These include a beach bag, insulated bottle or lunch bag and protective sunglasses/mobile phone case.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course through online face to face discussions and written feedback on your progress. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course.

Additional costs and requirements

You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.

To make the items you will need plastic bags, sweet wrappers, crisp packets (are excellent for fusing), onion or fruit nets, bread bags, bubble wrap (good insulation) – in fact any soft plastic bits or packaging in as many colours or textures as you like which might be interesting; an iron and ironing board or suitable table top with a cloth; a piece of cotton fabric like a pillow case, roll of baking/greaseproof paper, ruler, pen or pencil, scissors, optional hot glue gun, needle and thread and a sewing machine.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Your tutor will suggest ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning.

About the tutor

Deb Perry has been teaching in adult education for 25 years as well as working as a designer and maker. Although a well-qualified ceramics specialist with an M.A gained in Stoke-on-Trent, Deb’s degree is in 3-dimensional design. She has a lot of experience in different arts and crafts including recycling, papercrafts, printing, textiles and props and costumes for theatre. Deb believes that learning should be fun, stimulating and stress-free and tries to create an environment where everyone can feel at home.
