Abstract drawing and mixed media experiments: FULL
Who is this course for?
This course may suit you if you have an interest in learning about drawing and painting in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere.
These are short interactive online live courses aimed at building your skills and knowledge for developing your understanding around abstract drawing. They include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course.
This course is experimental and expressive, using simple shapes, line and mark making. We will discuss composition and layering and build a series of pieces, using paint and varied drawing media. It is a starting point to encourage freedom in art and could lead to further courses.
There are no wrongs or mistakes!!
You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.
Watercolour or a strong, heavy weight paper. If you have a range of media to use, that would be helpful. Acrylic paint, watercolour if not, brushes, pens, coloured pencils, markers, oils, pastels or a white pen. I will be using black and sepia inks too. You do NOT have to have ALL of these, just a small range to experiment with. Masking tape and a few twigs and non standard painting implements like a feather and a fork.
You can work from a small table at home, where you can spread out the list above, comfortably.
Support and feedback
Your tutor will support you throughout the course through online face to face discussions and written feedback on your progress. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Your tutor will suggest ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning
You will need to buy a cake or doughnut, as suggested by the tutor and be ready and relaxed.
About the tutor
Carolyn Shaw started working at Learn Devon in February 2020, teaching a range of Art techniques. She trained at Coventry University in BA hons in Fine Art, with Printmaking as her specialism.
She had worked in both Manchester and New Zealand for over 20 years, as a teacher of Art and Design in High Schools, in Tertiary and with adults. Carolyn works in all mediums with her learners including digital based imagery, painting, ceramics and Printmaking. She has successfully created and sold her own printmaking all over New Zealand both individually and as part of the Studio Printmakers. Carolyn returned to the UK to live in 2019 and chose Devon, where she is selling her work now.
When not producing her own work, Carolyn spends lots of time with her rescue dog, swims and tries to surf on her longboard. She is hoping to rediscover the landscapes of Britain and travel around in her mini campervan when things go back to normal. She is looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and family.
Carolyn loves teaching Art and enjoys the moments when people create something that excites them or say ‘I didn’t think I could do that’. She thinks it is important to allow people to see that Art is accessible and her classes should be a place of experimentation, support and enjoyment, where the experienced and the novice can both succeed.
