Have a go - have a throw
Who is this course for?
This session is for learners who would like to discover how to use a pottery wheel.
By the end of the session you will have been introduced to a pottery wheel and formed basic shapes which you may choose to be fired.
Support and feedback
Your progress will be measured through: Continual “assessment” ie. Informal discussions at the beginning and throughout the course and by learners’ own evaluations at the end. Practical progress can be measured through development of the practical and design processes and course folder notes including photographs of work.
Additional costs and requirements
All tools and equipment are available to use, except for personal protective clothing – you will need your own apron or overall.
Finished glazed items cost £3.75per kg – this includes materials and firing.
Please be aware that due to the nature of ceramics some items may not complete the firing process as you envisioned. This can include cracks, breakages and unintentional glaze finishes. You will only be charged for fired items that you take away with you.
You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2018 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
Learners will be encouraged to gather inspirational and useful resource material at home ie. postcards, internet images, magazine cuttings etc. to use to develop ideas.
