More watercolour painting for beginners

Who is this course for?

This course is for students who have some experience of watercolour painting as it will refresh techniques that are known to you as well as introduce new techniques including composition building using perspective. Come along and learn something new and develop your existing skills. Taught in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Course content

You will produce a minimum of two finished paintings, one based on a still life arrangement and the other using an image that you like and bring in as a starting point.

Techniques used will include:

Wet on wet, wet on dry, salt and bleach dispersal, cling film resist and masking fluid resist.

You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2019 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.

Support and feedback

The tutor will always be there for help, advice and support.

Additional costs and requirements

A pencil, a range of brushes, palette and waterpot, watercolour paints, watercolour paper.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

No, but anything you did would be to your advantage.

About the tutor

Harry Roberts currently works on Art and Design courses and a range of Art/music based ALDD courses for Learn Devon.  

Prior to this he worked for North Devon College (Petroc) for 12 years as a Fine Art Lecturer and Tutor. Before this he had four artist-in-residence positions in the UK and was International Research Fellow at Exeter College of Art and Frankfurt Akademie, and Junior Fellow at South Glamorgan University.  

Harry has a PGCE from the University of Reading and a BA Hons (Ist class) from the Polytechnic Wolverhampton and Ecole des Beaux Arts de Lyon.  

When he was a student his tutor was Anish Kapoor.  

‘I love showing people new things and materials and helping them develop their skills. I believe everyone has a creative ability. We all drew before we could speak but sometimes this creative ability gets lost or buried. I like people to find what they never really knew they had.’
