Learn to sew: curtains
Who is this course for?
During this workshop, you will learn how to create a professional looking ‘hand finished pencil pleat curtains’. This course is suitable for everyone. No previous experience is necessary. You will be using hand stitching and machine stitching.
During this workshop you will learn how to calculate fabric quantities, how to cut out and construct a hand finished, lined pencil pleat curtain using a straight machine stitch and several hand stitches and how to apply pencil pleat heading tape. You will have time to complete one small sample curtain.

Additional costs and requirements
We have Janome sewing machines for you to use in our workshop. A basic sewing kit will be required. Needles, threads, fabric scissors, paper scissors, embroidery scissors, a stitch ripper, pins in a pin cushion, a tape measure and a set square. Please store all items in a tin or box. You will need some fabric and lining fabric to create your curtain. The curtain can be made from an old curtain or other upcycled fabric. You will need a piece of fabric approx 70cm long x 50 cm wide.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
About the tutor
Sam Brown, tutor for Learn Devon offering courses in design, crafts and employability skills. Her background is in Graphic Design, an Interior Designer and Manager in interior and fashion retail.
Sam qualifications include BA (Hons) in Design/Typography from the University of Plymouth and diplomas in Interior Design and Fashion and Textile Design.
Sam includes combining old and new technologies in her work from hand embroidery to digitally printed fabrics.
