Clay modelling

Who is this course for?

Suitable for beginners or those with a bit of clay experience, who would like to explore modelling with clay. This is an introductory course.

Course content

Handling clay and modelling tools to try a range of hand modelling techniques including using simple supports and armatures to produce a series of 3D outcomes and possibly a finished fired clay model. We will mainly focus on heads, faces, figures and animals but there will be the opportunity to explore your own themes too.

Support and feedback

Demonstration and instruction from tutor. One to one support as appropriate. Ongoing review of set tasks and outcomes through discussion with tutor and group.

Informal talks and feedback and a short learning plan to complete.

Additional costs and requirements

An apron or old clothes to work in as clay work can be messy.

No entry requirements.

You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2018 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details. 

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

In order to progress at a pace you are comfortable with and to get the best from the course you may wish to continue work or practice techniques between sessions. The tutor may set some optional tasks for individuals or the whole group, both within the sessions and to do in your own time.

About the tutor

Franca Westaway has been teaching art and design since she came to the South West in the 1990s. Franca is passionate about helping others to gain creative skills and confidence, whatever their area of interest. She has a wide range of experience both in schools and with people of all ages within the community and is particularly keen on 3D and practical techniques across many materials and disciplines.
