Textile art: felt, batik and weaving

Holsworthy Pavilion, Holsworthy

Who is this course for?

This is a course for the novice or those with some experience. It is taught in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Drawing skills not necessary. Come and make something beautiful and have some fun.

Course content

You will look at a range of Artists and Designers to generate designs and ideas in the mediums of felt, batik and weaving. This introductory course will teach you how to use each technique independently, with the hope that you find something that you love to do and wish to explore further.

You will use the wet-felting process to create an A4 felt piece. The process is an easy and satisfying one, regardless of your perceived artistic skill! Use colour in a creative, thoughtful way and the softest of merino wools to create a pictorial felt painting or completely abstract piece.

You will use batik techniques to create your own work. You will use traditional ‘tjanting’ tools and hot wax to layer coloured inks and build your own pattern and design. Depending on experience, you may wish to use the technique on fabric or paper.

You will make a small weaving using a simple loom. Enjoy choosing, combining and using colourful yarns, found fabrics or including natural forms in an imaginative and thoughtful way. You will learn how to set up and thread your loom. This creative and meditative process is easy but satisfying. You will see some of the modern artistic possibilities of this ancient medium using the simplest of equipment.
