Who is this course for?

This course is designed for students with prior experience and will build upon these skills.

Taught in a fun and supportive atmosphere

Course content

You will design the size and shape of your painting. This will be cut from plywood and stretched over with cotton duck canvas and primed. This will form the base for your painting in acrylic paint, using a restricted palette.

Support and feedback

You tutor will advise, help and support you throughout the course.

Additional costs and requirements

Two images of abstract paintings you like. A set of paintbrushes, 4” brush for priming, palette, sketchpad. Acrylic paint. A piece of 9mm plywood.

I will supply the canvas and primer

You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a  short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged  over 19 on 31st August 2018 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

No, but anything you did, especially compositional studies would be to your advantage.

About the tutor

Harry Roberts currently works on Art and Design courses and a range of Art/music based ALDD courses for Learn Devon.

Prior to this he worked for North Devon College (Petroc) for 12 years as a Fine Art Lecturer and Tutor. Before this he had four artist-in-residence positions in the UK and was International Research Fellow at Exeter College of Art and Frankfurt Akademie, and Junior Fellow at South Glamorgan University.

Harry has a PGCE from the University of Reading and a BA Hons (Ist class) from the Polytechnic Wolverhampton and Ecole des Beaux Arts de Lyon.

His current area of interest is in using paper pulp, dyes and oil paint to create large constructions that straddle the line between painting and sculpture. The current series of five works has taken four years and is due for exhibition next year.

He has held one-man shows at most large cities in the UK including two in London and has won 12 awards and prizes at local and national exhibitions and was awarded the gold medal in Fine Art in Newport, Wales.

His work is in various public and private collections including; Tarmac, Granada Television and three LEA collections.
