Book-binding and Print-making for all
Who is this course for?
This is a relaxed studio group running once a month for those who wish to explore aspects of printmaking and bookbinding as a creative craft.
You can book individual 2-hour slots as a taster or build your own tailor-made course by booking multiple slots. Creating complex or multiple artefacts; perfecting a broader range of skills.
Contact Learn Devon for a ‘call-back’ from the Tutor for guidance on how many sessions a project might take.
Each date will be split between Bookbinding and Printmaking.
These will be skills focussed sessions suitable for all levels; any existing skills are welcomed and can be built on and developed.
You will develop skills used by Printmaker’s and Bookbinder’s, applying these to produce a number of artefacts; working on tutor set projects or a project of your own.
By the end of each session you will have learned or practiced a number of bookbinding or printmaking techniques.
Although the studio group is focused on individuals working on their own projects with technical support, guidance and demonstrations; group projects can be undertaken as well.
A range of materials and resources are supplied. Some techniques require additional equipment and resources therefore if you have specific requirements, please make contact with the Tutor.

Binding styles taught can include:

• Quick Casement Binding (Good for learning core skills)
• Open-spine decorative stitch
• Japanese-style and contemporary stab-binding
• Traditional Casement Binding
• Concertina and Accordion binding (AD)
• Folded books
• Binding over tapes or cords (AD)
• Mock embossing
• Closures and decorative embellishments (AD)
• Binding using leather, fine papers and recycled materials (AD)
Printmaking techniques offered include:
• Woodcut (AD)
• Fabric block printing (AD)
• Small Collagraphs (Due to press bed size) (AD)
• Embossing (AD)
• Small Drypoint works (On metal and Perspex) (AD)
Support and feedback
This an informal session where you will receive one to one support and feedback from your tutor
Additional costs and requirements
You can if you wish bring your own ideas for designs or binding styles. The tutor supplies all basic sundry materials and tools for experimental work.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
There will not be formal homework but learners are encouraged to continue to develop your practice outside of the classroom to further develop confidence in techniques learned.
All relief printing and bookbinding techniques learned are easy to replicate at home and this idea will be explored in the classroom.
About the tutor
Brian Norman works as a Tutor for Learn Devon, and teaches Bookbinding, simple book restoration and a number of Printmaking processes. He also works as a Specialist Mental Health Mentor with other organisations.
Brian has a BA in Fine Art; specialising in Printmaking, from Sunderland University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Online Education from Open University and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education from University College Suffolk.
Brian was taught the craft of Printmaking from Master Printmaker and Artist Pris Forrest in the late 1980’s with a focus on Linocut, Screen-print, and Etching. He has continued to develop these skills focusing on Collagraphy, Linocut, Monotype and mix media processes.
Brian has pursued range of other creative interests to include photography, papermaking and the creative potential of bookbinding.
Brian has work in private collections held by other artists in the UK and in New York. He has run Printmaking and Binding workshops at Bovey Tracey Craft Festival for a number of years.
He rarely exhibits his work with his focus being more about ‘play’ and the process of making.
Creativity should be about ‘play’, and is an intuitive process; trying and pushing ideas to make new forms and allowing ideas and images to evolve into being.
