Who is this course for?

This course is designed for those with prior ceramic experience. You will learn specific set skills as well as develop your individual course of study. The atmosphere is supportive and friendly. It is fun.

Course content

Make 2D and 3D objects using handbuilding, cast and thrown techniques. Explore slip trailing and kiln fired glass incorporated into your work

Support and feedback

You will have formative assessments (a chat with your tutor) every week and a summative assessment at the end of the course.

Additional costs and requirements

A set of clay tools, brushes, small sketchbook. You may need to buy some coloured glass. There is a charge for clay and glazes, but this is rarely above £10.

You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2017 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

No, but any ideas you have about the direction of your work will be of benefit.

About the tutor

Harry Roberts currently works on Art and Design courses and a range of Art/music based ALDD courses for Learn Devon. For two months over the summer he works for a language company at Shebbear College, teaching English and Sport to French students.

Prior to this he worked for North Devon College for 12 years as a Fine Art Lecturer and Tutor. Before this he had four artist-in-residence positions in the UK and was International Research Fellow at Exeter College of Art and Frankfurt Akademie, and Junior Fellow at South Glamorgan University.

Keith has a PGCE from the University of Reading and a BA Hons (Ist class) from the Polytechnic Wolverhampton and Ecole des Beaux Arts de Lyon.

His current area of interest is in using paper pulp, dyes and oil paint to create large constructions that straddle the line between painting and sculpture. The current series of five works has taken four years and is due for exhibition next year.

He has held one-man shows at most large cities in the UK including two in London and has won 12 awards and prizes at local and national exhibitions and was awarded the gold medal in Fine Art in Newport, Wales.

His work is in various public and private collections including; Tarmac, Granada Television and three LEA collections.

When he was a student his tutor was Anish Kapoor.

‘I love showing people new things and materials and helping them develop their skills. I believe everyone has a creative ability. We all drew before we could speak but sometimes this creative ability gets lost or buried. I like people to find what they never really knew they had.’
