Dressmaking

Kennaway Centre, Exmouth

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for everyone interested in learning or improving their dressmaking skills. The projects are suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience.

Course content

This course will introduce several dressmaking techniques including: how to use commercial patterns, inserting zips, buttonholes, hems, darts and seams. At the end of this short course you will have learnt these techniques and will know how to use a commercial pattern. You will create a small folder of samples for you to refer back to – your own mini ‘sewing bible’

Support and feedback

To find out how you are getting on, you will complete an individual learning plan and have one-to-one discussions with your tutor. You will also create a small folder to demonstrate your work including samples and ideas.

Additional costs and requirements

Yes, you will need to have your own materials and equipment.

We have Janome sewing machines available for you to use during this course.

You will need a basic sewing kit – this should include: tape measure, pins (a pin cushion would be useful), hand sewing needles, a variety of polycotton threads, tailors chalk, a few zips, sharp scissors for cutting fabric, general scissors, a stitch ripper, a ruler and pencil. Please can you bring a container to store your equipment in the classroom (a biscuit tin or recycled ice-cream container)

You will need fabric for this course – any pieces of fabric larger than A4 will be ok, cotton or polycotton would be best.

Please wear suitable clothing and bring a notebook and pencil/pen.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

To get the most out of this course, you will need to finish work started in class each week ready for the following week. There will also be some research to complete.
