Patchwork and quilting

Who is this course for?

This short course is suitable for everyone interested in patchwork and quilting techniques. The projects are suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience.

Course content

This course will cover skills and techniques essential in patchwork and quilting: Using a rotary cutter, hand and machine piecing, the ‘quilt as you go’ technique, EPP (English paper piecing) and FPP (foundation paper piecing), Crazy patchwork, hand quilting and machine quilting.

Support and feedback

To find out how you are getting on, you will complete an individual learning plan and have one-to-one discussions with your tutor. You will also create some samples of techniques.

Additional costs and requirements

We have Janome sewing machines for you to use in our workshop. Please bring some cotton patchwork fabric and thread with you for making samples the first week. The tutor will advise you of extra supplies needed for subsequent weeks.

A basic sewing kit will be required. Needles, threads, fabric scissors, paper scissors, a stitch ripper, pins in a pin cushion, a tape measure. Please store all items in a tin or box.

We have cutting mats, rotary cutters and patchwork rulers available but please bring yours along if you have them.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

To get the most out of this course, you may need to finish work started in class each week ready for the following week.

About the tutor

Sam Brown currently works as a tutor for Learn Devon running courses in craft and design. Prior to this she had a varied career working as a Graphic Designer, an Interior Designer and as a Manager in interior and fashion retail.

Sam has a BA(Hons) in Design/Typography from the University of Plymouth as well as diplomas in Interior Design and Fashion and Textile Design.

Since childhood, Sam has loved making handcrafted pieces, developing skills in needlecraft and creative textiles techniques. She is interested in combining old and new technologies in her work from hand embroidery to digitally printed fabrics and from letterpress printing to Adobe Creative Cloud.
