Print making and book binding
Who is this course for?
This is a relaxed group running for 5 weeks for those who wish to explore aspects of printmaking and bookbinding as a creative craft. This is a course suitable for all levels; any existing skills are welcomed and can be built on and developed. You will develop a range of skills used by Printmaker’s and Bookbinder’s, applying these to produce a number of artefacts.
By the end of the course you will have produced a book and a number of prints using a single or combination of techniques.
Techniques planned include Copic bookbinding; Linocut and Drypoint printmaking. Resources and guidance could be provided if individuals want to work on their own projects or other processes. Please make contact with the Tutor to discuss your requirements.
Support and feedback
This an informal session where you will receive one to one support and feedback from your tutor
Additional costs and requirements
You can if you wish bring your own ideas for designs. The tutor supplies all basic sundry materials and tools for experimental work.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
There will not be formal homework but learners are encouraged to continue to develop your practice outside of the classroom to further develop confidence in techniques learned.
All relief printing and bookbinding techniques learned are easy to replicate at home and this idea will be explored in the classroom.
About the tutor
Brian Norman works as an Art and Craft Tutor for Learn Devon.
Creativity should be about ‘play’, and is an intuitive process. Trying and pushing ideas to make new forms, allowing ideas and images to evolve into being.
John Cleese (1991) said about creativity; “This is the extraordinary thing about creativity: If just you keep your mind resting against the subject in a friendly but persistent way, sooner or later you will get a reward from your unconscious”.
These ideas encapsulate my approach to my creative practice and are the underpinning philosophy of my arts practice.
He also works as a Mental Health Mentor and Specialist Tutor providing support to Open University Students. Previously Brian worked for City College Plymouth (2009-2014), West Suffolk College (2007-2010) and Suffolk MIND (1993 -2010).
Brian has a BA in Fine Art; specialising in Printmaking, from Sunderland University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Online Education from Open University and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education from University College Suffolk.
“Having been taught the craft of Printmaking from Master Printmaker and Artist Pris Forrest in the late 1980’s with a focus on Linocut, Screen-print, and Etching, I continue to develop these skills focusing on Collagraphy, Linocut, Monotype and mix media processes. More recently exploring the creative potential of bookmaking.
Brian has work in private collections held by other artists in the UK and in New York. He has run Printmaking and Bookbinding workshops at Bovey Tracey Craft Festival since 2010.
