Copper heart mobiles
Who is this course for?
This course is for beginners and experienced learners in metal work alike, however you must be confident in craftwork and confident about using tools. There will be a a degree of manual dexterity and strength required to undertake the practical work.
On this course we will be creating hanging decorative mobiles made from copper. You will learn how to saw and file metal and then personalize it by learning how to use texturing, stamping and piercing techniques.
Support and feedback
There will be plenty of one to one support throughout the session, as well as demonstrations. I will give you continuous verbal feedback on your progress.
Additional costs and requirements
All materials and tools will be provided for you, although you will be asked to purchase the metal on the day. Between £4 – £10 is a guide depending on quantity. You may like to bring a pencil and sketchbook and some preliminary research of your choice.
You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2017 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
You may like to think about some ideas before the course in the way of sketches or photos. And there is always extra polishing you can do at home!
About the tutor
Naomi Davies-Tonkin (BA Hons.) is a practicing designer and maker of jewellery in precious and non-precious metals, as well as combining other materials and media. She is trained to degree level in Three-dimensional design, specialising in Jewellery and is also a qualified teacher (PGCE) at secondary level in Design and Technology. She has taught in various schools and colleges in Devon and currently makes, sells and takes commissions as well as running workshops for Learn Devon and privately.
