About the tutor
Maria Moorhouse currently works as a Craft tutor teaching stone carving skills and clay sculpture for Learn Devon and runs her own workshops at Dartington Hall Estate for adults. Maria has her own stone carving collective called Sculptworks, which she set up in 2011 in which all the members are students that she has taught the skills of stone carving. Maria exhibits and attends craft events to show the public the fulfilling skill of carving stone with her collective Sculptworks. Maria has a Fine Art BA Hons degree from Kent Institute of art and design at Canterbury in which she specialised in sculpture. She studied architectural stone carving, masonry and letter cutting at Weymouth College in Dorset for 2 years and now has her teaching qualifications up to level 4 to teach adults aged 16 plus. Maria is a practicing artist producing her own sculpture in stone and has exhibited at many exhibitions around the country including Rossmoor gardens and Chichester Cathedral.
“I get great pleasure from teaching people with a keen interest in stone. The tool skills and methods learnt help them to produce their own unique creations. I have experienced that stone carving has strong spiritual connections with people I have taught over the years, it becomes more than just a hobby for students, it is a form of relaxations and focus”.
