Christmas: Willow Christmas trees

The Mansion, Totnes

Who is this course for?

Come along and I will show you how you can make yourself some seasonal decorations which you can take home and enjoy for years. Suitable for absolute beginners or those who have some prior knowledge.

Course content

You will be bending and twisting willow into tree shapes, about 20cm high. You will have time to experiment and learn several techniques which you will be able to have fun with and take away to use at home.

Support and feedback

No need to worry. Everyone is able to make something. There are many ways to make a creation and each one is individual. Your success will be a personal acknowledgement.

Additional costs and requirements

Your tutor will advise you on materials, tools and equipment during your first session, though it would be helpful to bring the following, if possible.

Materials: Bring any long bits of vegetation you think would be suitable to weave into your creations, such as ivy, broom. Also, if you like, you may wish to bring sparkly ribbon or wool to weave in. I will bring a few varieties of willow and other bits I have to hand.

Equipment: Wear old clothes or bring an apron. A pair of snippers or secateurs would be useful. A bag to carry your creations home.

You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2017 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

No, unless you are enthused to make more!

About the tutor

Jude Cranmer currently works as a Tutor for Learn Devon as part of a long career in education in Devon and elsewhere. Throughout her life she has made things from natural materials ranging from baskets to dens to coracles to spoons. Her study of plants and growing them in an organic garden links with her interest in food and eating well to keep healthy. Jude has inspired others to believe in their own ability ‘and have a go’. Her learners have achieved top grades at ‘A’ Level or completed personal goals such as completing Ten Tors, weaving a basket or making a cake. She has had private commissions for Living Willow structures such as wedding circles and garden hurdles and worked with many schools and community groups to create Willow play areas. She enjoys walking, learning new skills and being creative.

I love giving Learners the confidence to have a go at something, encouraging them to succeed by trying new skills and then appreciating what they have achieved.
